Little Gaddesden

A note from the Churchwardens: Mike Walsham and Dan Graham

Our Vicar

We have a new Team Vicar. We were delighted to be able to announce at the services on 18th July that John Russell had been appointed to the post of Team Vicar in the Berkhamsted Team with responsibility for Great Gaddesden, Little Gaddesden and Nettleden. John will be licensed by the new Bishop of Hertford on 31st October at a service at St Peter & St Paul, Little Gaddesden at 3 pm.

We look forward to welcoming John and Karen and their family amongst us. They will be taking up residence at the vicarage in Great Gaddesden in the near future. We are very lucky that it has taken such a short (some might say a record!) time for the appointment to be made. This is largely due to the efforts and support of Michael Bowie (the Berkhamsted Team Rector and Rural Dean) and Jonathan Smith (Archdeacon of St Albans), to whom we are very grateful. We also thank all those on the Interviewing Panel, in particular: Nicholas Halsey (Patron of Great Gaddesden), Robert Clarke of Nettleden and Anne Wooster of Little Gaddesden as representatives of the Three Parishes in the appointment process.

We have asked John to tell us a little about himself and this is set out below:

I am 54 years and I grew up not too far away in Abbots Langley and attended Watford Boys' Grammar School.  After seven years at school, I went to the London College of Furniture for three years, to study Violin Making, after which I earned my living for more than 15 years as an instrument restorer, specialising in the double bass.

Vocation to the priesthood was never far from me and finally in 1993 I went to Ripon College Cuddesden, near Oxford to study for full time ministry. I was ordained deacon in 1995 and a year later ordained to the priesthood. I served my title as Assistant Curate in Newport Pagnell, with Lathbury and Moulsoe after which I was priest in charge of Wing with Grove and Mursley Deanery Youth Chaplain, later becoming Area Dean.

I spent some time out of ministry, during which I returned to instrument restoration, but returned to be Non Stipendiary assistant priest in the Berkhamsted Team two years ago (one year with Bishops' Permission to Officiate and then Licensed to the Team).

I am married to Karen and have been for 32 years. Karen is a Community Matron, with special responsibility for the elderly working in Newport Pagnell. We have three children; Michael (28) a Primary School teacher, Charlie (25) an account manager and Katherine (20) a medical student at Birmingham University. The boys have their own homes and partners, but are regular visitors at weekends, whilst Katherine is based at home but is  at university during term time. The final member of our immediate family is Winnie, a three year old Golden Retriever, who will joining me on frequent walks in the parishes. In our early years of marriage, we lived in Linslade from where I went into ministry.  More recently, we have been living in Aylesbury and it is from there we shall be moving to Great Gaddesden. We are very much looking forward to our time amongst the three parishes and look forward to meeting you all soon.

John Russell.
